Short But Crucial- A Child's Medical History

Parents are all too aware that both the adventures of summer and the persistent social interactions at school can affect a child's chances of becoming sick or injured. When these unfortunate events occur, the pediatrician may need your child's medical history. The Nemours Foundation released a series of recommendations for logging your child's history now so that you don't have to try and remember it all during an emergency. The history should include information about:

  • Allergies to any known medications (prescription and non-prescription), insect bites or stings, and food allergies

  • All medications (again, both prescription and non-prescription).

  • Pre-existing health conditions or illnesses, such as asthma, epilepsy, or diabetes.

  • Previous hospitalizations or operations.

  • Immunization history.

  • Approximate height and weight (check back on this one regularly- kids can grow up fast).
